Exploring the waters off the coast of Hacarmeel in Haifa, Israel, a surprising discovery was made: a perfectly preserved cross sword dating back 900 years.
During an underwater diving expedition in a natural cove near the ancient port city, Shlomi Katzin discovered a remarkable find. The Crusaders had captured this city from the Arabs in the early 12th century AD and it served as the backdrop for its discovery. This coastal site, which has survived as a safe haven for ships seeking shelter from the elements for millennia, has been actively used since the Late Bronze Age, approximately 4,000 years ago, as evidenced by archaeological artifacts.
While identifying stones and metal anchors on the seabed, Katzin found a three-foot-long, engraved and ornate iron sword with a 30-centimeter hilt. Katzin recovered the sword and reported the find to the Northern District Theft Prevention Unit of the Israel Antiquities Authority for inspection.
Nir Distelfeld, inspector at the Israel Antiquities Authority, said: “The iron sword has been preserved in perfect condition and is a beautiful and rare find. It evidently belonged to a crusader knight. It is exciting to try to interpret such a personal object.” , taking you 900 years back in time, with knights, armor and swords.”
